The National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge ( INSA) is the research institute of the Portuguese Ministry of Health with scientific, technical, administrative and financial autonomy. INSA´s mission is to contribute to gains in public health, incorporating also the functions of national observatory and national reference laboratory of the Portuguese health sector. Its mission is ensured through research and development activities, differentiated services provision, post-graduate training, dissemination of science activities and external quality assessment in the areas of public health, infectious diseases, chronic-degenerative and genetic diseases, and environment-related health problem. INSA is organized in six departments: Food and Nutrition, Environmental Health, Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology, Genetics and Health Promotion/Chronic Diseases, all devoted to the development of multidisciplinary programs in problem-areas of public health.

INSA cooperates with several international organisms, among which are the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). INSA is a member of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes and of several European and international scientific networks. It also participates in several EU projects and maintains collaborations with numerous foreign institutions.

INSA has been conducting forefront research in emergent problems that potentially affect human health and the environment, which includes the safety of nanomaterials' production and use. The Unit of R&D of the Genetics Department will be involved in the present Joint Action, given the expertise of the Genetic Toxicology group in the development and application of genotoxicity models for risk assessment of chemical, physical and biological agents, and it will contribute to the characterization of the in vitro and in vivo genotoxic properties of selected manufactured nanomaterials
