The Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine ( NIOM) is the leading institute in the field of occupational and environmental health in Poland having status of WHO Collaborating Centre. It maintains links with many international institutions (ICOH, MEDICHEM, IARC, EUROTOX, ACGIH, EUPHA, ASPHER, EASOM, IUPAC). The toxicologists from NIOM for many years have been involved in assessment of genotoxic/ mutagenic ( comet assay, micronucleus test, mouse lymphoma assay), carcinogenic, reproductive, neurotoxic, and pulmonary effects of chemicals. Molecular Toxicology Laboratory has implemented Good Laboratory Practices system for conducting in vitro studies in the field of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity/mutagenicity.

Scientists from NIOM participated in several EU funded projects on nanosafety issues: NanoInteract, a FP6 project on mechanisms of interactions of nanoparticles with living systems as well as Impart and Nanotox, FP6 projects aiming at improving the understanding of the (toxicological) impact of nanoparticles on human health and the environment. Recently is a member of MARINA (Reference methods for managing the risks of engineered nanoparticles) project.
